Grow Your Brand Visibility - Nicole Pearl

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Pearl, a TV beauty & lifestyle expert and PR coach based in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a PR & Media Coach (nicolepearl.com) teaching small business founders and creatives such as salon owners, realtors, and fashion stylists how to get publicity and become everyone's go-to without having to spend a cent on PR. Utilizing my 25 years of media experience as a national magazine editor and freelance writer who turned me into a TV Beauty Expert, I bring my intimate understanding of both sides of the business and not only teach you the insider strategies and systems to position, pitch and profit, but everything is personalized to you and your brand. I created both my 1:1 Total Media program and my live 5 Days to Free Press course + 1:1 workshop to equip you with the exact steps to get your name in the news so you can stake your claim as the AUTHORITY in your field, AMPLIFY your message faster, and ATTRACT bigger opportunities, which all lead to more income.

Tell us about yourself

My business happened by accident! I was on a social audio App called Clubhouse and heard too many people offering the wrong advice on how to pitch the media, and it broke my heart to see so many small business owners and thought leaders invest all of this money with no results to show for it. I knew I could do better for them. So I started my PR & Media Coaching business. To date, every one of my clients has had media success using my methods. I offer unprecedented access and provide an editor's insight to identify the nuances that will give you a leg up over your competition. My goal is to level the playing field because I believe everyone should have the chance to get the media attention they deserve. I'm also a mom of three, and as my business grows, I keep my kids updated so they can see the challenges, hard work, and rewards that come with being an entrepreneur.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For my PR & Media Coaching Business, I measure my success in my client's success. Their media wins are my media wins. One of my biggest accomplishments is how I helped one of my clients transform her business by shifting her founder's story. She went from being ashamed of her point of difference to embracing it as her superpower, and this new selling point is opening doors. Since she reworked her founder's story, she has landed major media, has new offerings on the way, and has garnered interest from a potential partner that hadn't been responsive in the past.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The backend execution is my Achilles' heel. I struggle with the technical parts, such as building a landing page, the logistics of running a live course, and creating automation systems to have more efficient operations. I am very hands-on with my clients and never want to create a vibe that feels impersonal. Finding the balance and putting these plans in place eats a lot of time. So I am working on finding trusted people to assist with the behind-the-scenes support.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't force it. I attribute my success to the fact that I took a grassroots approach to both my businesses as a Beauty Expert, aka The Beauty Girl, and as a PR & Media Coach. If you feel like your idea isn't flowing, it may be a sign that you're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, as they say.
  2. If you are a service-based business, don't take your experience for granted. Sometimes we become so insular that we don't realize that the expertise we have developed is the invaluable piece of the pie someone else is craving to move their business forward.
  3. Collaborate. Find others who are aligned with your values and are in complementary industries. Work together to promote and support each other, and you'll reap the benefits of sharing your audiences with each other.
