Fabulous Hand-Made Candles - Nicki Nu’s Candle Shop
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicki Jackson, Owner of Nicki Nu’s Candle Shop, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
One of my businesses is candle-making. I create single, three, and four wick candles. All hand-made with love and soy wax, so it is environment friendly. My business is a reminder that everything you need is already within you. Don’t let capitalism tell you otherwise.
Tell us about yourself
Well, my name is Nicki, and I currently work full-time for a nonprofit organization. I’ve been working here for about two years. I started my business after reaching a really low point in my life. I was depressed about some of the decisions I had made and was looking for a creative outlet to express myself. I’ve always had a love of candles and being a single mom with two kids. I couldn’t always afford the luxury of having them.
So I decided to make my own! I love the calmness that comes over me as I’m candle-making. It helps so much with my anxiety, which motivates me to continue honing my craft. I was tired of investing myself in someone else’s dream and wanted to create my own. My own business to inspire others, a legacy to leave behind for my kids.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is almost selling out at my first pop-up event in Indiana. I was really grateful for all the support I received.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me as a business owner is being consistent. I have a lot of things on my plate, and sometimes I’ll get distracted and focus on other areas of my life. Even though the passion for my businesses never left.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Three top tips for anyone looking to start, run, and grow a business are;
- Try to be as consistent as possible.
2. Don’t follow the wave. Create them.
3. Marketing is a huge part of your business
