Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Latina Nickelson, Founder of Nickelson Project, located in Lake Mary, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nickelson Project, Advocacy, Coaching & Consulting. It is my home of ideas, information, and empowerment for parents, caregivers, and families of children with disabilities. Our primary mission is to help redefine the seats at the table for this group through IEP strategy coaching, support services, education, and training.
Tell us about yourself
I began my professional life in the out-of-school-time education sector. Then I gained guardianship of my 2 Autistic grandsons, who needed help. The process was not only frustrating but overwhelming. I had to learn how to advocate for these precious boys. I took class after class and realized if it was this hard for me, a reasonably educated woman, how many other families found it difficult? I had to help, and the Nickelson Project was born.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a business owner who does not sell physical products, I see my accomplishment in parents and caregivers who are confident in the meeting they attend. Who told me that the services requested were approved. Who see progress in their children. No one family is my biggest accomplishment. They all are big because the children succeed.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me as a business owner in this industry is when I know I can help a family, and they choose not to sign on as a client. I then wonder how they are doing in school. However, on the business front, because I do not sell a physical project, it is challenging to market and promote because I have to connect with people virtually, and at times my sincere intent is not conveyed virtually.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure it is what you want to do business building is not for the faint of heart.
- If you are in the business of selling knowledge or information, you only have to be one step ahead of your clients to be credible.
- Understand that everybody will not be able to travel in the spaces your business will take you, and it is ok.
