Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nick Burton, owner of Bell's Bookstore Cafe, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Bell's cafe is an old-style cafe with a charming rustic feel that has been in the community since 1996. It feels like the kind of cafes you get in a small town. We pride ourselves in the quality of our homemade soups and treats, and especially our coffee. We have a wide range of customers who have been coming to bell's for many years and continue to support our local business.

Tell us about yourself

I started visiting bell's cafe when I was delivering for Canada post and loved the coffee and atmosphere. My wife had been working there for 3 years as she was going to university and we loved this coffee shop very much. When the previous owner said he was going to retire, my wife and I were delighted to have the opportunity to take the business over. We decided to keep the name, recipes, and coffee the same as this business has been a big part of the community since 1996. My wife and I like to keep the feel of a cozy cafe while also offering new menu items and allowing local artists to display and sell their works in the cafe.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking over the business, as we are first-time business owners. We are very proud of this accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Honestly, the work is very enjoyable, but the hardest part, I'd say, was all the paperwork that comes with taking over the business. Obtaining permits and licenses, and certifications was a necessary challenge but well worth it once completed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. As an owner, I feel creating an atmosphere that is pleasant for the customers and your staff will help ensure everyone feels welcomed.
  2. Don't be afraid to try new things for the business. Get creative and add new things to the menu or the shop itself.
  3. Don't be afraid to jump in if an opportunity comes around to start a business. It may feel scary, or you may be uncertain, but if you give it your all and show your passion, your customers will feel that as well and support you along the way.
