Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert O. Newman, President and CEO  of Newman Intervention & Addiction Services, located in Kansas City, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Newman Intervention and Addiction Services is a family-owned business that helps families of addicted loved ones who are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction and refusing help OR addicts who are seeking effective addiction treatment options.

Tell us about yourself

Having struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for over 15 years, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to enter a long-term drug rehab program and change my life. I really wanted to give back and started by helping set up a drug education program at the same rehabilitation program and eventually took on more responsibilities that led me to work in admissions. Working in admissions took me to perform interventions. After setting up a drug prevention program that reached over 635,000 people in several states, developing an aftercare program, and running an Outpatient program, I eventually went into business for myself. This line of work is tough, but helping people change their lives is rewarding to the degree that there are no words. Each and every day, I am involved with parents getting their kids back or becoming part of their lives again, along with many other things.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Overcoming the fear of stepping out on my own. I cannot see myself ever going to work for someone else at this point.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing everyday affairs and being consistent with doing so. This is not a 9-5 job. It's an all-day, everyday job, and if you are not willing to put in the time, then the likelihood you are going to succeed is greatly diminished.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't let fear be bigger than your dreams.
  2. Layout and identify the ideal scene for your business and identify how far you are away from it and then start implementing steps that will get you there.
  3. Have the correct estimation of the effort it takes to get you to the ideal scene and then put the work in.
