Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Judith Knight, Founder & CEO of New Tricks Web Design, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is New Tricks Web Design. Since 2010, we’ve helped more than 300 new businesses, established organizations, and growing nonprofits across a range of industries connect with customers, clients, donors, and community members online. Clients, large and small, value our deep digital industry knowledge, our roots in Atlanta’s WordPress community, the thoughtful way we collaborate with them during the website creation process, and the ongoing support we provide following the launch of their sites.

Tell us about yourself

In 2009, I created a blog for my dog on Dogster and made a blog for myself on WordPress. People who saw my sites asked me to help them build sites for them. I started a WordPress Meetup where I could meet people to help develop my expertise. I started a business and named it New Tricks because digital marketing was so new everyone had to learn and use new tricks! My team and our clients motivate me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building an excellent, cohesive team that our clients love working with. For the past twelve years, my son has worked with me at New Tricks as our creative director, one of his long-time friends joined our team shortly thereafter to handle our hosting and maintenance, and another young woman who was a part of our original Meet Up group continues to work with us as a copywriter.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Suiting up, showing up, and doing the work, after day after day, no matter how you feel. I heard Lady Gaga admit to feeling insecure on a regular basis. Here’s what she has to say, When I wake up in the morning, I feel like any other insecure 24-year-old girl. Then I say, ‘Bitch, you get up and walk the walk today.”

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the time to build a unique, effective website for your business.
  2. Identify your target clients, and be clear about what you provide for them.
  3. Write content on your site that creates a connection with your target clients. Let them know that you understand their issues and can help them solve their problems.
