What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is New Order Coffee Roasters, a small-batch coffee roaster. My customers are males and females of all ages that enjoy freshly roasted, locally sourced coffee. We roast in small batches and offer free local delivery to customers within our delivery area.
Tell us about yourself
I started in coffee working at Starbucks. I really enjoyed how coffee brings all kinds of people together over such a simple delight. When I discovered freshly roasted coffee, I knew I wanted to forge my own path. After learning the craft for a few years, I helped open my current business. I am motivated by people enjoying that delicious cup of coffee daily, just as I do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Navigating the pandemic. We had to close our cafes due to high rent and shutdowns. This led me to pivot the business to focus on online and wholesale business and smaller venues such as farmer's markets, where we could more easily build relationships with our community. Today we are doing well and hoping to expand again once the pandemic has subsided.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Navigating the unknowns and financing those unknowns. Especially in today's economy, you really need to be on top of your finances and goals; otherwise, it is easy to go astray and down a path that won't be successful.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be organized!
- Have passion for what you want to do.
- Learn and adapt when faced with failure as it will happen.
