Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Gibson, founder of New Nurse Academy, LLC., located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
New Nurse Academy is a nursing education and professional development consulting firm specializing in changing the culture of nursing through emotional intelligence and leadership in healthcare diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our audience range from student nurse to nurse professionals along the continuum, as well as schools of nursing and healthcare organizations/hospitals.
Tell us about yourself
As I grew in my career as a staff nurse, I became increasingly drawn to patient and student nurse education. I became a clinical nurse educator/adjunct faculty for a BSN program in Philadelphia. I started my business when my students wanted me to tutor them after clinical. To ensure a delineation between my role as faculty and a paid tutor, I created my business entity to set up services while serving my students in a different capacity.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being featured in Oprah Daily Magazine has been my biggest accomplishment as a business owner! Reps from Hearst Magazine reached out to me in November 2021 to get my story on how I used the power of partnership to take nursing in a new direction. That feature vastly increased the visibility of my business and created more opportunities for me to share my story and services.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is learning when to delegate tasks to other people. Because this is my baby, and I am fully responsible for all aspects of the business, as a first-time business owner, initially, I had difficulty trusting that someone could execute my vision. However, I knew my business would not scale if I did everything by myself. While I am still a "solopreneur," I know my business will not be sustainable if I don't have help.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 tips I'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business are to constantly invest in yourselves to hone your gifts and hire help as soon as possible so you can work ON your business and not IN your business. And lastly, to leverage the power of partnership, connections, collaborations, and networking. It's not about what you know or who you know, but about who knows you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I encourage anyone who has a gift, skill, or talent that comes easy to them or they're passionate about to share it with the world in the form of a business. Our gifts were not meant to keep for ourselves but to assist the collective and foster community.
