Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Raelyn Stanhope, Founder of New Moon Holistic Therapies, located in Live Oak, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business consists of three main modalities: PEMF (Pulse Electromagnetic Field) Sessions, Hands-on Reiki, and women-only Swedish Massage. My clients are people that suffer from anxiety, in need of pain relief, better sleep, and general relaxation. Currently, most of my clients are males when it comes to using my PEMF machine. My Reiki clients, oddly enough, are children 8 years old to 16 years old, plenty of women and men love this modality as well. As for massage therapy, I only see women, which I prefer for various reasons.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had an affinity for helping people feel better, so I decided to start by obtaining my massage therapy certification over 15 years ago. The energy that I received from giving my first massage gave me so much satisfaction that I immediately knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Since then, I have received my certification as a Reiki Master and performed energy work on adults, children, and pets.

I started with corporate chair massage and distance Reiki healing, and in just three years, I moved on to seeing clients in my home therapy studio. Seeing the results people get from my work is what gets me excited to start my day and continue to perfect my practice. Helping my clients with real issues, such as mental and physical well-being, is all I need to feel like I am truly serving my community and living out my soul's purpose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being that I am also a registered yoga teacher and a certified life, spirit, and energy coach, I am able to help my clients not only on but off the table as well. With that being said, my biggest accomplishment is client retention. My clients are never pressured to see me on a set schedule. I always tell them to listen to their body which gives them complete power to take control of their wellness. My clients leave with tools and techniques to help them with their daily routines, and when they feel they need extra care, they know I am here for them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I guess one thing that I find challenging is sticking to my schedule. While I do always take my appointments on time, I wish I had more time in a day to give to each client. Some clients don't realize they need more time with me until their appointments are just about over.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Survey the local area to make sure it's not saturated with the same offerings.
  2. Join a networking group.
  3. Spend money on marketing.
