Caring for Both Mind & Body - New Milford Counseling Center

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Rancourt, Director and Co-Founder of New Milford Counseling Center, located in New Milford, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a group mental health practice with a focus on women's wellness, treating people living with perinatal mental health conditions, trauma, stress, and marital conflict. We strive to offer quality mental health services in a prompt manner. With our country's current mental health crisis, the demand for our services has never been greater. We have doubled the number of patients we see since we opened our doors in 2016 and planned to continue to grow our business to meet the needs of the people in our community.

Tell us about yourself

I am the father of 5 children who motivate me every day to become a better person and work to improve our community. I worked in nonprofit agencies for the first half of my career and found the environment stifled my creativity and prevented me from being the best version of myself. Becoming an entrepreneur has offered me endless opportunities for growth and creativity. Working with a team of passionate people inspires me to do my best and provide opportunities for my team. I never know what challenges I will face each day, and that's very exciting.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In late 2019 we purchased an office building for our practice when the pandemic hit, and we couldn't use our offices to see clients. We quickly pivoted to offering online services while the restrictions were in place. This helped maintain an income stream and helped us keep our offices and ultimately offer both online counseling and in-office therapy after the restrictions were lifted, increasing our client base.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing and maintaining finances. From hiring to purchasing office supplies, if you don't know your numbers, you won't last long.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a plan and revise it as necessary.
  2. Know your numbers.
  3. Avoid shiny object syndrome.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When we went to online counseling, we reached people around the state and New York. We had one client contact us from Scotland, and we provided services she couldn't get in her country.
