Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debby Neely, Founder of Neely Coaching & Training LLC., located in Frederick, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Neely Coaching & Training LLC supports leaders, whether they have the official title or not, in getting results and building relationships. We know that leadership is not easy. We also know that people are capable of greater things than they realize when they are willing to do the work. Through leadership development and coaching, we partner with leaders to develop their leadership potential, discover their authentic leadership style, and find success on their leadership journey.

Tell us about yourself

My passion for leadership started by hearing my Dad quote Zig Ziglar and noticing all of the leaders around me in school and in my community. I spent almost thirty years in a Fortune 50 organization where I was fortunate to both hold a leadership position and then support all levels of leaders as a coach and leadership development facilitator. My desire to expand my reach to more leaders to not only support them but also learn from them prompted me to “open the doors” to Neely Coaching & Training LLC in 2019.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love learning. Where I learn best is pushed outside of my comfort zone and, in the deep end, hands-on, figuring things out. I knew I had the knowledge and skillset for my craft. I had to learn the ins and outs of running a business and all that comes with that as a one-woman show with unexpected twists and turns like a pandemic. I’m proud to say I’m in year four and still going!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I came from a big organization with a lot of resources. Now, I am technical support, subject matter expert, marketing, backup, and the final decision maker. The buck stops with me. And I’m good with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why – write it down and be specific, including how it makes you feel and your personal definition of success for your whole life, not just your business. This will become your touchstone when things get rough or when you are making decisions.
  2. Be ready to evolve – have a plan and know when you need to be flexible, listen to your gut and make changes that make sense not only for your business but for you personally.
  3. Find your community – Find people to learn from, to offer and get support, who have knowledge and experience, and to connect with. You are not alone.
