Developing Lifelong Learners - Navigating Homeschooling

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leanna Zimmerman, Founder of Navigating Homeschooling, located in Tucson, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an author, blogger, and experienced homeschooler. It is my desire to encourage others on their homeschooling journey. My articles include curriculum reviews, ideas, materials, study guides, and helpful tips for those considering homeschooling, new to homeschooling, and veteran homeschoolers alike. I am a second-generation homeschooler - I was homeschooled through high school. For those new to homeschooling, I can offer the unique perspective of homeschooling as both a child and parent.

Tell us about yourself

I am passionate about inspiring parents to be involved in their children's education. I believe anyone can homeschool if they are committed and have a desire to learn. I believe children with parents actively involved in their daily life and education will thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was completing a novel, which I'm currently querying. I'm writing a second novel that features a homeschool mom and her two children. There are few novels that feature homeschooling in a positive light, so I'm really excited about this one.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to operate a blog and how to drive traffic to a blog was probably my biggest challenge. It took time and a lot of trial and error to begin growing an audience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. For a blog, it's important to have regular and unique content. Know what's already out there, and try to offer what your target audience is looking for, but with your own spin.
  2. Be active on social media, but pace yourself. You want to engage and respond quickly to your audience but not spend so much time on social media that you're neglecting the main thing - in my case, that would be writing articles and books.
  3. Be passionate and work hard. If you don't care, no one else will either.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

At this point, my main focus is my own children's education. So my blogging and writing will remain more of a side job. However, I'm setting up the foundation of what I hope will be my future audience when I go full-time. I intend to make writing a full-time career in the future.
