What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a nature watercolor and ink class in a box for beginners. Nature Sketch Crate makes it easy for people to start with simple printed and video-guided lessons. No drawing experience is needed to create one plant and one animal painting each month. Just transfer the provided image by tracing it onto the watercolor paper, filling it with a few watercolor layers, and finalizing it with ink lines. Applied sketching lessons are also provided to help people grow their skills. The class is intended for anyone interested in painting and nature.

Tell us about yourself

I am an award-winning Scientific Illustrator and a mother of two young boys. As a mother, I found I had little time to paint for myself. As a result, I honed a sketching method that was simple and quick. My goal is to share this method through Nature Sketch Crate to help more people start painting, connect with nature, and reduce stress. Studies have shown that art and nature can reduce stress, make people happier, and improve memory and attention.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making my business a reality is my biggest accomplishment so far. I love that I have created something that helps people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me about being a business owner is taking the next step forward to grow my business. Each step seems insurmountable until I finally take it. I accomplish this by breaking the big steps into smaller ones that are more manageable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just get started, keep moving forward, and don't overthink it. Like with my art lessons, I suggest taking it step-by-step to get to where you want to be. In the beginning, don't let the imperfection of the business keep you from making it happen. Then, continue moving forward.
