Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Condrac, a miniature artist, based in Trafford, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is selling handmade miniature artwork. My customers are art enthusiasts and fellow creators who enjoy unique additions to their collections.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been a creative individual, but my fascination with miniatures is what motivated me into making scale models. I love making worlds of different perspectives that create a foundation for curiosity and imagination. Our world is full of unknowns and mystery, and the creation of my miniatures allows me to capture that mysterious narrative and share it with others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is not giving up. Most artists, after graduating, go into teaching or marketing and design, but I have always wanted to be someone whose main job was to make art. It has been an extremely challenging road full of learning and trials, but I have not let up on my dream of being fully supported by my art. While I still have a ways to go, I have taken large steps towards art being my one and only job, and that is what I consider to be my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Many things are difficult about being a business owner, such as knowing when to stop working. When you are your own boss, it is hard to relax when you're afraid you're not doing enough, regardless of how much you've done. That inability to relax and feel like you've truly done enough in a day is probably the hardest thing for me about being a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Motivation is important. Find something you truly enjoy, and motivation will come easier.
  2. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So take everything in steps. You can't rush the process; you'll overwhelm yourself. Lay things out in simpler steps, and you'll achieve more than if you try to rush to the finish line.
  3. Don't give up. It takes time to start a business, but there is no chance it'll work if you give up. Everyone's business unfolds at a different pace. Don't compare yourself to others who seem to achieve success faster than you. There are so many different factors to starting a business. As long as you work hard and don't give up, play with trial and error, and find your market, success will come your way.
