Above All Else, Success in Life & Business® - Nancy D. Butler

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nancy D. Butler, CFP®, CDFA®, CLTC®, CSA®, Founder of Above All Else, Success in Life and Business®, located in Waterford, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an international speaker, award-winning author, business coach, and more.

Tell us about yourself

While a divorce with no child support, alimony, or other sources of income and only $2,000 to my name, I moved myself and my children 70 miles and started my own business in an industry I knew nothing about, asset management, and financial planning.

Even if the business didn't work out, what I would learn about managing money would help me to raise my children. I loved the difference I made in my clients' lives. Before selling the business, I built the company to $200 million in assets under management.

And although I no longer financially need to work, for the last fifteen years, I have been an international speaker, award-winning author, business coach, and a three-year delegate to The United Nations for The Commission on The Status of Women.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Raising my children on my own with no money while building a very successful business, finding a buyer, planning the sale, and completing it precisely as scheduled on the day and in the amount intended.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Clients don't just walk in the door or call on the phone. You have to be good at media relations and marketing so the public knows who you are and how you can help them. I got very good at that, and after about five years, I did little-to-no marketing for 20 years and was always booked six weeks out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a PERSONAL business plan and follow it.
  2. Know when the right time is to hire your first employee and do it.
  3. Know what you are good at and what you are not - find people or services to do the things you are not good at.
