Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nanci Hogan, Founder of Nanci K. Hogan Coaching and Consulting, located in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a philanthropy coach and consultant who helps aspiring philanthropists make a transformative and lasting impact in the world in an area of complex social injustice that concerns them. I also work with organizations to help them develop their CSR projects so that they have maximum impact.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated by my core value of liberating people to flourish so that they can help others flourish. I love helping people find their purpose and vocation to make a difference in the world and to develop their own social justice initiative based on who they are, their gifts, skills, passions, vision, and purpose. I want to see obstacles and injustices to flourishing removed so that people can reach their full potential.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a coach has been to help a number of people discover what issue they're passionate about addressing and then set up their social impact project to address it. I helped a high school math teacher believe in her abilities and interest in setting up computer programming courses for underprivileged students in her school. I have helped another woman develop a cross-cultural exchange programme between her school and a school in Tunisia using singing as a bridge. I have also worked with one non-profit organization to develop its international advocacy strategy at the United Nations level using their wealth of experience and knowledge gained in grass-roots anti-trafficking and anti-slavery projects.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think the hardest thing is that as a solopreneur, I am responsible for everything, including delivery of services, marketing, admin (although I have a VA that helps), keeping up with social media, etc. I love networking and doing the social media side of things. I'm good at writing and delivering content, but not that good at selling and marketing myself and my services. I have done a 6-month marketing group coach training, which has helped a lot. But it's still not my forte.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something that you love to do and are good at.
  2. Staff to your weaknesses if you can afford it.
  3. Know your mission, purpose, and vision in the world and stick to it throughout. Your business is a reflection of you.
