Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skin care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Magdalene Lafontant, Founder of Nakai Skincare & Cosmetics, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nakai means "be beautiful" (Shona language from Zimbabwe). There's a wide range of skincare for all ethnicities, from cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers, and masks. You truly feel beautiful and embrace your true skin when using Nakai. I also created a lipstick collection; as we all know, every woman gets a boost of confidence when wearing their favorite lipstick. The lipstick also brings out each person's individuality.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Zimbabwe, and growing up, I had my fair share of skin issues. I'm an esthetician by profession, and I have been in the Esthetics Industry for over 22yrs. My passion for helping others feel comfortable in their own skin has always been one of the reasons why I chose to start my own skincare line. I love everything to do with skin. It is our largest organ in the body, after all. Educating people about the importance of taking care of their skin and seeing their progress is truly fulfilling.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The fact that I created my own skincare line and never gave up is a big accomplishment for me. It will continue to be on this journey of learning.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think continuously finding ways to keep growing. The beauty industry is always evolving, so you must stay current, and that involves a lot of consistency which is not a walk in the park.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find your purpose: There's always more to it than just making money.
- Be okay with rejection: Not everyone will understand your dreams.
- Invest in advanced learning, and be okay with being a beginner.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Always carry joy with you and cultivate humility.
