What's your business, and who are your customers?

Is Hospice For You is an online course with video content that provides hospice education for families to teach them everything they need to know - what to expect, what to say, what to ask, and what to prepare for to lessen their family’s fear of hospice and feel confident in their decision to get the hospice care and support.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been a practicing Registered Nurse since 2011 and started my career in hospice in 2016. Throughout the years, I was told by many family members that they signed hospice consents in fear and anxiety because they just didn’t know what else to do for their loved one with chronic disease who needed a lot of support. I noticed that families who knew what to expect and had more clarity of what to prepare for felt the most supported because they came into hospice with confidence and understanding rather than anxiety, stress, and fear. Although there are many resources and fantastic hospice pioneers out there trying to lessen fear about hospice by normalizing conversations about death, I found that many families still resist hospice care and support. This is especially true in adult children taking care of immigrant parents who came from a country that does not practice hospice the same way. I even noticed this within my own family. I found that speaking about death added more anger and resistance to accepting the inevitable. But I also found that more education on the practicality of hospice, what to expect from the nurses and the hospice program itself, what to say and ask, and teaching what to expect in the last moments of life lessened the fear and resistance. And this brought families in alignment with hospice goals and an understanding of the tremendous support hospice can provide - not just for patients but for the families. By listening to my video lessons, I hope to ease some anxiety surrounding hospice and give more relief to families who are unsure or scared about hospice.
