Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Strong, co-founder of myMindBodyBaby, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
If you are struggling to conceive, then myMindBodyBaby will provide you with research-based lifestyle programs to help improve your fertility outcomes. Whether you are just starting out or are in fertility treatments like IUI and IVF, we provide our community with access to proven systems but also to a greater community of like-minded women who get 'it.'
Tell us about yourself
Struggling with fertility challenges was the hardest years of my life. Appointment after appointment, too many needles to count, treatments, medications, surgeries, and almost losing my life to a missed ectopic pregnancy almost broke me. As a nutritionist, I did everything 'right' but still found myself without a baby and looking for more answers, control, and certainty.
After finally conceiving, I wanted to make it my mission to support other women on their journey to parenthood. I wanted to help make their family dreams come true with research-based strategies that I KNEW made a difference. I wanted to be a part of someone's fertility success and to help lessen the pain they were most certainly feeling. This is what drives me each day to work with women all over the world - to help them gain access to science-backed tools for improving fertility outcomes.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting a small business and developing a brand new product that didn't exist before has had its challenges. Unfortunately, the topic of fertility challenges is still taboo, and women aren't always willing to step forward to ask for help. myMindBodyBaby aims to provide awareness and support to help women feel comfortable reaching out for the help we know (from the research) to be a powerful adjunct to whatever they are doing at home or in a clinic. My greatest joy and sense of accomplishment come from the emails and messages I get from women who say that they are pregnant after using my programs. In fact, the programs are so robust that they are also being utilized in infertility clinics.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest part is juggling so many hats. I have had to figure it all out - from accounting to marketing to tech. Of course, I have other professionals helping now, but being a business owner requires you to figure it out. You need to be scrappy, think outside the box, and always be willing to pivot and try new things. So while some of that can be exciting, sometimes that can be tough for someone who doesn't love surprises.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't try to do it all. It will just take away from where your strengths are. Hire out (even if it stretches the budget). Focus on building, not on figuring out how to balance your books.
- Get comfortable with the idea that you may not be making money right away. It can take time and persistence. But, if you stick it out and have a solid idea/plan, you will reap the benefits.
- Find a mentor. Someone you can bounce ideas off of. Someone who can help hold you accountable. The more brains, the better, in my opinion.
