What's your business, and who are your customers?
We work as your unbiased financial planner that is not incentivized or required to offer financial products to help you reach your goals. If you don't have current advisors and need solutions, our CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®s) have access to some of the top subject matter experts in legal, accounting, tax, investments, insurance, family office compliance, etc., to help you fill your needs. This gives you the confidence in knowing that you will get mile-wide (comprehensive) and mile-deep (leading industry insight) with every financial planning experience.
Tell us about yourself
I've spent most of my career in the financial services industry and continue to learn new things every day. Despite all that I know now, I am still learning, and new things are being created all the time. It is amazing to think that only a few decades ago, the 401(k) plans that people are so familiar with now were a niche company-stock deferral strategy for executives. This is what motivated me to build up My Financial Coach to help bring new ideas and concepts in an unthreatening way to people who may never get the same insights because their passions are in other areas. What things are people unaware of that will become important for them and everyone else in the future?
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As with many businesses, our company was impacted by the COVID lockdowns/ pandemic. During this time, we did not let go of staff or reduce pay/hours and continued to grow our team. We were extremely grateful that we were one of the fortunate businesses to do so.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is not knowing what the hardest thing is since there are so many day-to-day concerns that come up. Some are of a personal nature, others are of an investor-based nature, and others are of a structural nature.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, I would say that no two companies are completely similar, and what may work for someone else may not work for you. Try to take the advice given to you by well-meaning people within that context. Secondly, I would say that you should build what you need, not necessarily what you want. You may be working on marginal improvements on a payments system that works, but if your marketing is suffering and doesn't work, you may need to readjust and spend more time to get greater marginal improvement for the time you spend. Lastly, be persistent in promoting your offering even if you aren't successful at first. There were many times when it may feel like a marketing effort doesn't work. It is important not to think that the strategy itself will never work, but the way you have marketed it might be the issue. Having an honest internal discussion before giving up works wonders.
