Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Davis Nguyen, founder of My Consulting Offer, located in Forest Park, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help aspiring management consultants get jobs at firms like McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Deloitte, and other consulting firms.

Tell us about yourself

After leaving management consulting, I joined an education company and took a 40% salary reduction to join; however, I was still living in California, so I had California rent, California cost of living, and a California tax to pay.

One day, a family member had a medical emergency and needed a $21,000 medical procedure, so to help pay the medical debt, I would coach our first clients to get consulting jobs on the weekends. This included revising their resumes, preparing them for interviews, and making referrals.

Out of that first batch of 13, all 13 got offers, and from there, word of mouth grew the business to where it is today, with more than 50 former consultants and recruiters helping our clients today.

While the medical debt has long been paid off, what motivates me today is seeing how many lives we change each day from all the video testimonials we get sent in voluntarily when someone completes our program and gets their dream job.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for me has been being able to tie our client results to impacting lives outside of our community. For example, we partner with over 20 non-profits to whom we donate to each year. We've been able to sponsor countless new schools in rural villages to medical surgery for kids. This motivates me even more to improve our client results because when clients get offers, we earn more profits which in turn we are able to donate to more causes.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is needing to manage your and your team's emotions. When business is going well, it is making sure you don't think that the high will last forever and build in caution. And when there are tough times, making sure people aren't always feeling down and have optimism about the future.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus - there can be 1000 things you want to get done right now, but there is always one thing that is the most important. Do that one thing and then move on to the next thing.
  2. Be humble when you are on a high and be optimistic when you are on a low. Owning a business is a roller coaster, so be prepared for the ride. When things are going well, enjoy it but also think about what happens when the good times end, and when things aren't going well, remember that hard times don't last forever.
  3. You can't do it alone. Ask for help and advice from those who have already been where you are to show you the path so you can avoid the pitfalls that slowed or completed stopped others.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember to enjoy the journey as much as the destination you want to get to.
