A Perpetual Work in Progress, a Practice - MW Wellness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marni Wandner, Founder of MW Wellness, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a certified health coach specializing in holistic stress management, nervous system regulation, and burnout prevention by optimizing nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and mindset. I also use a methodology based on the Chinese Five Elements to identify where people get stuck in behavioral patterns and how to build resilience against stress.

My clients are high performers and creative professionals who need to keep their brains sharp, their energy high, and their stress low. They're business owners and entrepreneurs; they're musicians and music industry professionals; they're agency folks and marketing executives and publicists and startup founders and freelancers and all kinds of other incredibly amazing people (and businesses).

Tell us about yourself

I spent about 20 years working in the music industry as an entrepreneur and executive. For most of that time, I owned and ran an entertainment marketing company working closely with musicians and creatives. My own experience with anxiety and burnout inspired me to get certified as a holistic health coach eight years ago, as I was frustrated by how difficult it was to learn the tools I needed to get better.

I've created a program that combines all of my health and nutrition training with my certification as a Five Archetypes coach and also uses things like neuroplasticity exercises to help my clients with habit and behavioral changes.

I'm constantly motivated by the drive to help people who are in pain and going through what they struggle with: anxiety, fatigue, headaches, insomnia, digestion and skin issues, irritability, difficulty focusing, and more.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to help people finally feel better when they didn't think it was possible is the biggest reward in the world.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Probably finding the balance between life and work. When it's your own thing, and you love what you do so much, it can be difficult to see where one starts and the other ends. It can also be hard to shut off to take breaks. Advising my clients on how to do this helps me to take my own medicine!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know that there will be ups and downs/highs and lows. It comes with the territory, and it can be scary, but it's also incredibly rewarding.
  2. Don't forget to take care of yourself - you can't do the work you love if you're not looking after your own body and brain. Likewise, make sure to fill your cup with outside inspiration to keep fueling your creativity.
  3. Ask for help when you need it! Running a business can feel very lonely, so having a community of other entrepreneurs is essential to bounce ideas around and even just to vent about things.
