Empowering People Through Movement - MUV Therapy
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nadir Mawji, Director of MUV Therapy Physio & Sports Medicine, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
MUV Therapy Physio & Sports Medicine is a physical therapy clinic in Mississauga that empowers people to live an active life free from painkillers, injections, and surgeries. We help active people in Mississauga return back to the activities that they love, from gardening to lifting weights at the gym or even keeping up with their grandkids. We started our location as a virtual physiotherapy clinic but quickly expanded to offer in-person sessions, massage therapy, and other wellness products and services.
Tell us about yourself
As a former back pain sufferer, I remember how hopeless it can feel when trying to find a solution. One of the reasons our clinic is so effective is that we take the time to listen to our patients and find the root cause of their concerns. All too often, in today's rushed healthcare environment, people are looking for a quick fix to their problem -- and often, there isn't one. I started the MUV Therapy clinic with the goal in mind to have a non-rushed atmosphere where people are listened to, given the highest quality of evidence-based care, and can participate in their own path to recovery.
Every day and my clinical team is motivated by our patient's successes, and we remember the positive impact that we get to have on their lives. Seeing our patients be able to return to having an active lifestyle puts a big smile on our faces every day!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Starting a clinic at the height of the pandemic in 2020 was no easy task. But I knew there were patients that needed help, so I started one of Canada's first virtual physical therapy clinics. It was so successful that we were featured in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Journal for our work, and this helped to spread the word about the benefits of physical therapy to a greater audience across Ontario. We won a number of awards of recognition for our innovation and adaptability. I like to think that our team was just doing the best with what they had. Fun fact, our furthest patient away lived in Red Lake, Ontario, where the closest physiotherapist was 300km away!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning how to grow a team, in my opinion, is the most important as well as the hardest part of being a business owner. Finding the right balance between compassion, humility, professionalism, and work ethic can be challenging. Lucky for us, we are off to a great start with our growing clinical and administrative team. I couldn't ask for a more supportive and superstar team. I feel very fortunate I get to work with such an inspirational team every day.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have you faced any adversity that you wished was easier? This can be the source of endless motivation and inspiration for you to solve a real problem. For me, having back pain for many years that stopped me from being active continues to be a source of energy and drive to help others in a similar situation.
- Start small, but think big. I started in my home, then a room in a doctor's office, and finally moved to a full bricks-and-mortar location by providing high-quality service and getting referrals.
- Create an outstanding team - you are building a company that will have a far greater impact than you can have individually. Think of yourself as the captain of the ship rather than having to do all the jobs yourself.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Go for it! Take the time to go for long walks and think about what you would like to create. I see the role of a business to be a problem solver. What problems do you see in today's world? How can you be an instrument of change to make a positive impact on the lives of others?
