The Right Teacher at The Right Place - Musiprof
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music & entertainment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elijah Baker, Founder of Musiprof, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Musiprof was created in 2017 to help qualified and experienced music teachers connect with students. Our audience, therefore, consists of both teachers and students.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a music teacher since graduating from Concordia University with a music performance degree in 2011. I started Musiprof as a way to market my services as a musiprof. Then it blossomed into a platform with over 130 teachers. I am motivated to work on this business every day because it brings together my passion for various skill sets.
Part of my day consists of all the administrative tasks of managing a business. Another aspect of my day consists of working with students and inspiring them to develop a love of music. I also love learning new skills around search engine optimization, marketing automation, and more. This keeps me excited, but it's for the fact that the marketing I am doing is in support of people playing music.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishment is having built this business myself with no funding or even the skills at first required to make it work. In the process, I learned about SEO, digital marketing, web development, CRM, and all the business skills involved in running a business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me as a business owner is being responsible for everyone involved, which you don't always have control over. Whenever problems or conflicts arise, which they always do, I am reliable and have to put out many fires. This can be stressful!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start a business around something that has meaning for you.
- Never stop learning new skills and improving your business.
- Start small, test things out, and improve as you do. It doesn't have to be perfect right from the start.
