Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Renee Cook, Founder of Musical Memory, located in Omaha, NE, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I create & sell homeschooling curriculum & products for homeschool families with elementary school-aged children.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a homeschooling mom of four young children. I love creating products that streamline the teaching process at home, making learning together simple & fun. It's so motivating to me when I hear kids (whether in our home or out of it) who are singing our songs and having fun learning new things. I know the songs will stick in their heads for life & inspire the kids to ask big questions & dig deep to explore ideas.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment in this business so far has been designing the program & writing over 175 songs (and counting)! It's been such a fun project to see come together.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, the hardest thing is having to pick and choose what to work on! I only have a few dedicated work hours each week, but I have 101 ideas. So, narrowing down my focus & investing my energy in the most important things is a necessity. But it's hard because I want to do all the things.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Keep at it! So far, not many people have heard of Musical Memory. But I feel like the vision is worthy of pursuing, so I keep running after it, knowing the hard work will pay off. Keep the success stories in the front of your mind as motivation for when you don't feel like persevering. And don't be afraid to pivot as you get new information over time.
