Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rich Sica, Founder of Musica Creative, located in Central Florida, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Musica Creative is a music strategy consultancy that provides brands and emerging artists with the tools and services needed to elevate their presence in media (TikTok, Instagram — you name it, we cover it). This is a culmination of everything I've learned through my background in media and advertising, not to mention all the passion I have for music and artist development. Here are our core services:

  • Music Licensing
  • Custom Music Creation
  • Artist Development
  • Strategy + Insights
  • Brand Education

My customers are brands, advertising agencies, music production companies, content creators, and anyone looking to gain more insight into music strategy.

Tell us about yourself

The truth is, every layer of music enchants me. Discovering and shaping emerging artists, partnering with brands to create exciting cultural moments, and marketing to consumers authentically through original, never-before-tried methods.

As a child, I was always surrounded by music, whether it was my grandmother cooking and cleaning to the sounds of Salsa or my mom, uncle, and cousins playing the guitar and teaching me the basics of chord progressions. My love for music was ingrained in the fabric of my upbringing, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I took the risk of starting my own consultancy because I wanted to continue servicing brands and agencies. I enjoy speaking with others, providing solutions, and talking through strategies. What most people don't understand is that everyone is a creative person in their own way, and collaboration offers so many different paths to success that is unique to each project.

What motivates me to do what I do is that the digital world we live in is ever-changing, which means I am constantly learning and growing while simultaneously helping others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is actually starting my business. The planning, paperwork, resourcing, and time really are an undertaking and an accomplishment in itself.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is networking and creating opportunities. To gain new business and clients, one must market themselves well and leverage their professional networks. Even with a solid network, the general ebbs and flows of the economy directly impact how people spend money, which affects everyone and especially me, in my business. Being able to find unique ways to obtain projects despite any volatile economic climate is a strong skill.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If not now, when?
  2. This isn't the end all be all. Just like any job, you may find that starting a business is not for you, and you can always go back and work for a company or corporation, but at least you can say you tried your own business.
  3. Take time to plan for what you will need—resources, savings, equipment, etc. While starting a business is exciting, it cannot be impulsive.
