Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kirsten Nelson, Owner of Music Academy of Utah, located in Washington Terrace, UT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Music Academy of Utah is a music school for students of all ages. We make it a priority to get to know students on a personal level and to become familiar with their musical needs and goals. We are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual. We want our students to enjoy learning!
We have two locations: Clearfield and Washington Terrace. We currently teach piano, violin, viola, voice, guitar, ukulele, clarinet, saxophone, flute, drums, and theory. We have students of all ages, from toddlers to adults.
Tell us about yourself
I have loved music from a young age. I grew up in a musical family and knew that I always wanted to have music in my life. I went on to pursue music in my college years and to teach lessons from my own studio. I was lucky enough to purchase this business from a friend and colleague.
My goal was to create a learning environment that was positive for students. I want students to be excited to come to their lesson each week, have fun learning, make friends, build self-esteem, and enjoy having music in their lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel that my biggest accomplishment so far has been being able to create a school where students enjoy learning. I feel lucky to be able to work with some amazing teachers who have become my friends.
We truly care about each student and want the best for them. We love to make learning an instrument fun with different activities throughout the year, such as recitals, contests, games, master classes, and holiday activities.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of my biggest challenges has been learning to run a business. Before purchasing this business, I knew how to teach music lessons very well, but I didn't know how to run a music school. Each day, I try to learn something new and better myself and the business. I have learned it is good to reach out and ask for help. There are lots of resources available to small business owners.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top three tips that I would give to anyone looking to start, run, and grow a business today would be:
- Don't give up, even when difficult situations happen. There is always a solution; sometimes, it's just hard to find.
- Surround yourself with good people.
- Think about your business through the eyes of the customer.
