Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in muscle recovery, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matt Hyder, the founder of Recoup, designing muscle recovery products based in the US.
Tell us all about your business...
Recoup designs innovative muscle recovery products, bridging the gap between professional training rooms and at-home muscle recovery. We are used by 100+ professional athletes, helping 200,000+ consumers with injury, pain and improved health.
What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?
Recoup was my 4th business after 3 failed business attempts. These repeat failures taught me one important lesson, solve your problems, not others. As a former athlete, recovery was a huge priority. After suffering an injury playing basketball, I tried all the typical recovery methods of foam rollers, ice cups, and lacrosse balls. None of which provided the relief I needed.
I created an $8 prototype of Cryosphere, solving 1 problem from each recovery method mentioned. The Cryosphere quickly gained the attention of professional athletes and teams. I knew I had something, making me drop out of college the last semester of my senior year to go full-time with Recoup. After 6 years of running Recoup with highs and lows, my motivation still comes from our customers.
Recoup was started to make people feel better. I am lucky I get to do that every day with every order! Their stories of overcoming pain with our products lights a fire under me every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
A feature in Inc. 5000 fastest growing companies
What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is time. There is never enough. How time is spent between all aspects of life and business is a constant struggle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?
1) Be Disruptive In Your Vision and Evolutionary in your actions. Successful disruption is done by evolving your daily actions.
2) Focus. The journey of entrepreneurship is filled with new and exciting opportunities causing pivots. Pivots eat time while throwing away a year's worth of work. Stay focused on what you set out to do.
3) Start Now. The number 1 comment I hear is, "I don't know where to start." The simple answer is to start where you think you should. No one can tell you how to start. It's all on you to figure out. Being a founder/ CEO is all about figuring out as you go with a focused vision.
