What's your business, and who are your customers?
Murphy’s Law Distillery is a distillery specializing in Moonshine and Liqueurs. Founded in 2015, the distillery caters to those seeking a large variety of liqueurs. Whether it is sweet, sour, or savoury, Murphy’s has developed something that will quench any thirst.
Tell us about yourself
I’m the older of the Murphy brothers. I attended University in West Virginia. Here, I studied psychology and ran cross country for the school. I had the intention of graduating and pursuing my dream of becoming a police officer. However, in my final year, I lost my hearing completely on my right side. This deemed me ineligible for the police force, and I switched paths to what I was doing on the side… making moonshine. During the summers, I would come home to the family farm and continue to make moonshine there with my younger brother Sullivan. We did this for a few years before deciding, “We will go legal with this.” In February 2015, Murphy’s Law was incorporated, and the journey of becoming the number one moonshine distillery began.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Murphy’s Law has had many accomplishments, from being recognized on the international stage and taking a silver medal at the New York International Spirits competition to pivoting and creating hand sanitizer for the community. Murphy’s Law has seen several successes.
For me, the first day we were accepted into the LCBO was the largest achievement as it signifies all of the hurdles we faced, overcame… and continue to overcome.
For Sullivan, there have been several huge accomplishments, from bootstrapping a company and growing the way we have to gaining further listings in other provinces and soon other countries.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Work-life balance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Always plan your business. Don’t jump at something you haven’t conducted research on. A salesperson will always walk through your door and explain to you why this product or service is the best. Do your homework on it, and you’ll likely find other better products that are less expensive. The same goes for employees.
- Treat your business relationships with the same level of care as you treat your friends and family. Those relationships will help you get through unexpected events in the future.
- Keep your perseverance. A business will have its ups and downs and can beat you down during the downs. Find ways to overcome.
