It's Time to Go Your Own Way - Multify
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caitlin Donohue, founder of Multify, located in New York City, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Multify is a career coaching collective that helps you GO YOUR OWN WAY. We believe there is no straight-lined path to success. We help artists, creatives, and multi-hyphenates translate their skills into new professional opportunities.
Tell us about yourself
I am a creative multi-hyphenate. I started as a professional theater performer in my youth, and as I've continued that pursuit, I've fostered many other fulfilling careers along the way. I've worn many hats: launching multimillion-dollar streaming applications at Disney, teaching early literacy and drama, leading digital media strategy for NYC-based small businesses, managing administrative efforts for high-powered executive teams, and most recently, MOM (my favorite)! I'm motivated by anyone who feels scared to transition into a new industry or role because they don't have direct experience. I'm here to tell you: in most cases, YOU'RE QUALIFIED! You just need someone to help you translate your experience and tell your story. That's where Multify comes in.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Since 2019, Multify has supported over 50 individuals in their professional career transitions. We've created dozens of application materials, coached clients through interviews and salary negotiations, targeted jobs based on specific skill sets, boosted brand visibility, and helped entrepreneurs optimize their businesses. Our clients' successes and new perspectives on life are my greatest accomplishments! I can't wait to continue to learn and grow with our community.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about owning a business is radical accountability. Everything good, bad, and in-between falls on your shoulders. Over the past few years, I've seen the importance of being 100% transparent with clients and delegating tasks when necessary. I look forward to further optimizing our internal systems and hopefully building out a strong team of mentors in the future!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you're looking to start your own business:
- Know "what you do." This may sound simple, but you need to be hyper-specific on the value of your services. What do you do? What are you bringing to the table? How can this help people in need? What can your company offer as a young business, and how will it have room to grow? Answering these questions will fortify your business's purpose and message.
- Research your ideal customer/client. Make sure you know who exactly you're trying to help. Are they located in a certain region? Are they between the ages of 25-35? Are they in a certain industry or profession? Can they be helped virtually or in-person, or both? How are your message and services going to reach them?
- Build your community from the inside out. Gather feedback on your business/services from people you know, love, and trust. This will help you polish your products as you begin to serve a wider audience.
