Tell us all about your business...

I help successful, driven, overworked, and overwhelmed female executives and entrepreneurs discover what they want in their lives, what they don't like, and how to bridge the gap to a fulfilled and healthy life.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

My first career out of university was in the finance and accounting world. I worked my way up over 15 years because you were supposed to work hard, get promotions, get bonuses (and stocks and company cars and pensions.. etc...) BUT... I did not feel like it was what I wanted to do! So I quit (this is not for everyone!) I went traveling, came back, and went back to school - I spent the following 15 years in the health and wellness space as a yoga teacher, personal trainer, and registered massage therapist. I knew I wanted to help people find a way to be happier and healthier... this was only my first step. As I worked with colleagues and clients, I discovered that there was more to do. I started coaching - I use all of my experience of the business world and my experience in the wellness space to help people map their way to their own best self - this is finally what I know I was meant to do!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Focusing on who I can help the most is a massive accomplishment for any business owner. Many entrepreneurs are skilled in various areas and can help many people, but you can make the most significant impact when you can focus on one group.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

This is related to the previous question - when you are a small business owner, you often are the person who does everything! Web design, customer service, sales, accounting, marketing... you name it. On top of that, you feel like you need to be available and provide everything that everyone might want - even helpful suggestions can send you down a track to work on how to give everything to everyone... this spreads you too thin. It can be challenging but hire out the repetitive tasks and focus on your strengths and who you can help most.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

  1. Hire out the repetitive tasks as soon as you can - it can be helpful to keep track of where you spend your time, how long it takes, and how much revenue it generates (if any) - if it doesn't make revenue, then you could be spending your time better elsewhere.
  2. Be very clear on who you are, what you do, and who you help - don't try to be a jack of all trades. You can, of course, help others, but you should focus your efforts on who you can help most and shine your light there.
  3. Be ready for the slow times. Growing a business is not an overnight success (no matter what anyone says). Knowing that it takes time and consistent effort will help you keep going when it seems like nothing is happening. Keep showing up, sharing your vision, keep helping people - if your business is needed, you will be successful by being consistent and persistent when you aren't feeling motivated.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being in business for yourself can be one of the most rewarding AND most challenging things you have ever done. Sometimes you will feel like giving up, and some days will be exciting. One thing - To help you get through the challenging days - have a swipe file filled with every positive email, comment, or mention you've received in your business - feeling down? Check on how awesome people think you are, and get back on the horse! And one more thing - If you need help, ask for it - no entrepreneur can do it all... you need your dream team to help you succeed.
