Tell us about yourself
I've been lucky in this life. Blessed in many ways. I grew up at the center of a caring and supportive family. Had the opportunity to receive a proper education surrounded by good friends. Encouraged to learn different and unconventional skills to broaden my perspective. I have always felt safe and sound. I've been able to travel and see the world to meet extraordinary people and visit unique places. But luck is a rare thing where I come from. My corner of the world is as special as it is unfair. Latin America is a region full of wonders, from beautiful beaches with clear waters in Mexico and the Caribbean to the breath-taking Patagonia in southern Chile and Argentina, to Rio de Janeiro's Pao de Açucar, to the mysterious Machu Picchu in Perú. Unfortunately, these wonders are not open to everyone. Nearly 700 million people live in this part of the world, and only a fraction have the opportunities and blessings I've had. For most, the reality is quite different. Living in dense cities with poor infrastructure, limited access to education or healthcare, and a social order that always roots for the same ones, many people in Latin America currently have very few shots of ascending throughout their lives. But this is changing. After all, the world is changing. Technology has been a real catalyst, and Latin America is starting to catch up. Small projects solving real problems can now become hypergrowth startups that raise millions to expand throughout the region. Incumbents are being challenged by the younger generation, and the old ways of preferring social status over talent are no longer valid. Through entrepreneurship and technological disruption, I hope we can improve the quality of life of millions in this region and hopefully help Latin America seize its unique and amazing potential.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Launching the product and operation in a new foreign country - I'm originally from Chile, and a couple of years ago, we expanded to Mexico - has been amazing. Not only from a business point of view, especially given the size of Mexico - but also as an experience. Getting to know the people and their culture has been a true gift, and I can't wait to continue on this journey.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is that at the end of the day, the math doesn't lie, and in tough moments you just can't pretend things are not the way they are. But that's also what makes you push harder and exceed your own expectations of what's possible.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have an extreme focus and the capacity to prioritize according to what's your main bottleneck of success (whether it's growth or profits).
- Be extremely honest with your current state in terms of product, profitability, team, etc. Don't let the fear of being honest become in the way of building a successful company.
- Enjoy the ride, and don't stress about things you can't control. Doing the hard things and also having a hard time makes it almost impossible, and it actually reduces your chances of success. So try to let go of things outside of your control and celebrate the small wins day by day.
