What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a training and coaching consultancy. My clients are professional athletes, sports teams, and businesses from a variety of industries, including insurance, legal and financial.
Tell us about yourself
I studied sports science and was fascinated with the psychology of performance. This led me into sales and understanding the importance of people skills in every business. I saw the parallel between the world of sport and business, and eventually, after much self-investment in education and various coaching courses, I started my consultancy sharing my ideas and methods. I was inspired by reading books and watching professional speakers, and I just thought, 'if they can do it, then I can too.' I am motivated by loving what I do and working with people I like. This makes the work enjoyable.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have written 3 books to date, which represent the amount of learning and development I have had to acquire over my career. The number of years of research and learning I have had to put into my craft is something I am proud of; the books are a nice reminder of that.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Managing uncertainty. There are so countless situations you find yourself in with nothing but a belief it will work out, the path isn't always clear, and you have to have faith in yourself and what you are doing.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do something you have a genuine interest and passion in.
- Surround yourself with the right people. You will need support, and you will need sound advice.
- Learn to listen to your intuition. You have to drown out the noise sometimes and just do what you believe in.
