Helping Women Humanize Leaks - MoxyPatch

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Remy Warren, founder of MoxyPatch, located in Kitchener, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A shocking 1/3 of all women will experience leaks due to incontinence in their lifetimes! Many of these women can’t even run around the block, participate in exercise classes, sneeze or carry in heavy groceries – without experiencing leaks!

The women who experience this problem are met with ‘solutions’ on store shelves which are just filled with absorbent, disposable products that don’t even PREVENT leaks! Sure, there are a few products out there that are designed to help prevent these leaks, but they are all either disposable, need to be fitted by a physician, or come with a hefty price tag! I realized that was a real need for an over-the-counter, eco-friendly, and accessible option that actually worked to prevent these frustrating leaks from happening in the first place. I couldn’t find any great solutions myself, so I set out to create one. After two years of research and testing, we have now created MoxyPatch – an over-the-counter, reusable and eco-friendly solution designed to actually to prevent leaks! (Hello again, white yoga pants! 😊)

MoxyPatch aims to humanize these frustrating leaks through humour, educate women via social media on their bodies and get people talking about their leaks (and MoxyPatch!). Our primary target market will be American women ages 28-55 years old.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated and passionate to wake up every day knowing that I am helping bring a product to life that can help many women. MoxyPatch is not a lifesaving product, but that certainly doesn’t mean that it won't be a life-changing product for many women. MoxyPatch has been over two years now in development, and I’ve noticed that my passion and excitement to launch MoxyPatch has grown exponentially throughout this time. The more women physicians, investors, and others that genuinely are excited about and support my idea and vision for MoxyPatch have caused a whirlwind of excitement in me. I am both anxious and excited to launch MoxyPatch, and it is (finally) almost ready!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say that creating and developing an over-the-counter medical device as a Solo Founder is my biggest accomplishment to date. Bringing a product like this to market is not something that I have previously had experience in doing myself. And with that comes a lot of challenges regarding understanding and complying with the regulatory considerations, the financial requirements, manufacturing specifications, patent considerations, and so much more! I am thankful that I have always loved learning new things like this and taking on new challenges, but I would be lying if I said that any of this has been easy!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say that time management has to be one of the biggest struggles for me being a Solo Founder. (Especially during covid with unpredictable school and work schedules!) I have often heard that having a strict routine or schedule to follow is best, but with remote schooling and younger children, the need and ability to be flexible in all aspects of work/life balance has been paramount. Prioritizing everything in advance and creating to-do lists the night or week before is definitely a life-saver for me!

As an Entrepreneur, I’m used to often working on weekends sometimes too. I am very passionate about what I do (and secretly even love Mondays sometimes so I can get back to business without distraction😉)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Definitely put an emphasis on making as many data-driven decisions as possible, but never underestimate your own intuition. Whenever things have gone wrong for me, I can often reflect on it and realize that I should have gone with my gut when I noticed red flags present in certain situations or business relationships. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
  2. You know your business the best. Always listen to advice from those your respect, and be sure to ask for plenty of it. However, just remember that you are the one that has to take all of that information that you have collected and make the right decisions for you and your business in the end. Just remember that when people offer advice, they tend to look at things from the narrower perspective that falls within their specific area of expertise and don’t always see how things may fit into the overall big picture of your business or vision.
  3. Never be afraid to ask for help. I have realized that asking for help in most situations where I might be stuck is always the right approach. Earlier on in my entrepreneurial journey, I was afraid to ask for much advice for fear that I would look stupid or it would seem that I didn’t know what I was doing. I would try to research everything on my own and make decisions from there. It took me a lot of extra time, and I always second-guessed my decisions. Now that I know better, I want to take all of the help and advice I can get! Asking for advice in certain areas helps me to come up with new ideas or new ways of looking at things, and you will likely be surprised how much people genuinely want to help! Most people are happy to help entrepreneurs in their community and share their insights and recommendations. You can meet so many great people that way. Then suddenly, you have a whole network of great supporters ready to help and cheer you on along the way.
