Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jami Furniss, owner, and CEO of Moxie Blankets, located in Clearfield, UT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Moxie Weighted Blankets specializes in helping people with stress, anxiety, insomnia, etc.. via our weighted blankets, which create deep pressure stimulation that helps your body naturally reduce the release of cortisol (Stress) and increase serotonin (relaxation).
All Moxie Blankets are handcrafted from start to finish and made in the USA, which is very rare for the weighted blanket industry. They are also made with certified top-quality Minky non-shedding fabrics, weighted with silica-free glass microbeads, evenly quilted, so the glass beads are in small 5x5 sections across the entire blanket and are machine washable.
The way we handcraft and fill our blankets is rare in itself. We quilt each blanket with 5x5 squares to ensure the weight is evenly distributed and ensures maximum deep pressure stimulation. Our plush minky fabrics are perfect for maximum comfort and softness.
We have three lines. The Classic, The Luxie, and a special line we created specifically for children with nightmares and bedtime anxiety called The Monster Protection Academy. This bundle comes with a certified weighted blanket, certificate, and storybook of how the MPA Blanket has helped another child with nightmares. The certificate states that the blanket has completed training and is ready to protect the child from nightmares and creatures in the dark.
Tell us about yourself
I've had the entrepreneur mindset since I was young and slinging candy bars out of my locker for .10 less than the vending machines. As a child, when my friends were playing with their barbies and dolls, I was playing CEO in my corner office with a nice window view. I have an ambitious drive for success that feeds my soul and a need to give my kids a beautiful life. Not simply with a nice home, flashy car, or fancy vacations, but by being at every sporting event, they have totally decked out in team gear, cheering as loud as I can and watching them enjoy every 1st place and each home run. Having dinner at the table as a family each night and praying together at the end of each day are two very important parts of creating that beautiful life as well.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I won the Best of State innovation Award and the 30 Women to Watch award. Both have been on my radar for a long time, and when I got the call for each, I was beyond excited and honored!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having to let someone go. It's never easier to fire someone, but unfortunately, it's inevitable sometimes.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
