Strives to Inspire Movement - Move N' Groove
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Macy Romero, Owner of Move N' Groove, located in New Iberia, LA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My name is Macy Romero, and I'm the owner of Move N' Groove Dance + Athleticwear! We are an online store specializing in dancewear, activewear, accessories, and more. We provide our products to a variety of customers - dancers, athletes, yoga lovers, gym rats, and people who just love to live in athleisure. We like to use the term "movers." If you enjoy movement, then Move N' Groove may have something for you! We are always striving to expand our inventory and size range so that Move N' Groove can be as inclusive as possible.
Tell us about yourself
I am a choreographer, former professional dancer, and music editor. During the dance season, I spend my days choreographing, teaching, and serving as Operations Manager and Assistant Director of the pre-professional dance program, Distinction Dance Company. Dance and my students have brought me the greatest joy in my life. I graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a degree in Business Management, hoping to operate a pre-professional program one day, but then Distinction Dance Company was born! I was and still am so blessed to be part of this incredible company, but I still wanted to use my college degree. My love for dance and the inspiration from my students lead me to open my online business, Move N' Groove Dance + Athleticwear. I want to provide the most cutting-edge, high-quality dancewear and activewear to young dancers and athletes all over the country who continue to inspire me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My business is still very new! We only just opened on October 3rd, 2022. Although we may not have as many experiences as other businesses, my biggest accomplishment so far has been actually launching the website. There were so many hurdles to jump through that no business degree could possibly prepare me for, so being able to finally open my online store was a great feeling.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
In my case, I am the owner, accountant, social media manager, sales associate, and marketing director. I do it all, and I think this is my greatest struggle, especially as a new business owner. I find myself having to really schedule time in my day to be able to complete what feels like an endless amount of tasks since I am the only employee. It's "all hands on deck" at all times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If you feel a calling to start something, keep it to yourself and only tell those who need to know. In other words, move in silence and surprise everyone!
- Make task lists! These have been instrumental to me in making sure I get everything done on a daily basis.
- Understand that no matter who you are or how much experience you have, opening a business is very hard. There will be days when you want to ultimately give up, but if you just push past the hard parts, the outcome can be quite beautiful.
