Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fitness and health but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian Murray, founder of Motive Training, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Motive Training is a personal training organization. We work with people across all spectrums, from athletes to people who have never touched a weight in their life, or kids as young as 8 to men and women as old as 85. We're a movement-focused gym, teaching people the importance of taking a full-body approach to staying strong, mobile, and healthy. So, we work with everyone, and we love that.
But, we see many more people coming through Motive with achy joints, pain, and injuries. Or people that are demotivated, frustrated, and unhappy with their progress because they're not receiving information or guidance that's meant for them. Everyone is unique, and we prioritize addressing that with every single person that comes into our gym. That's what makes us truly different from the competition.
Tell us about yourself
In 2006, I was lost, overweight, and depressed. After gaining over 80 pounds, I decided enough was enough and pursued a fitness and nutrition program on my own. Everything snowballed from there. I've worked as a trainer and nutrition coach in this industry for 12 years now, helping people move and feel better than they ever thought possible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've been in business for over three years now, and we're growing year after year. So it's pretty cool to watch everything unfold from all the hard work our team has put into this.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balance. It's tough to go all-in on your business and keep balance elsewhere in your life. It takes time, patience, and practice, but it's doable...mostly. ;)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be organized. Systems run your business, but only when they're well-connected and organized from the ground up.
- Customer service first. How you communicate and treat prospects, leads, and clients means everything.
- Service over sales. Similar to #2, your service should be top-notch. Make sure that is nailed down before you focus on sales.
