Creating Motion Where You Need It Most - Motion Counselling
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Lapczynski, Owner of Motion Counselling, located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Motion Counselling is a private counseling practice located in beautiful Kelowna, British Columbia. We offer individual, couples, and family counselling both in person and virtually.
In addition to counselling, we facilitate groups and retreats. We support children, adolescents, and adults and work with a wide array of presenting issues, including but not limited to: anxiety, depression, ADHD, grief and loss, life transitions, trauma, relationships, self-esteem, parenting, school-related concerns, and perinatal/postpartum support.
Tell us about yourself
From a very young age, I was a "helper." I sought out every opportunity to help in various capacities and felt fulfilled doing so. I knew that whatever I chose to do in life, I wanted to be helping other people, and working as a counsellor is exactly what I was meant to do. It felt very much like a calling to me. While I worked in agencies in the past, I dreamed of having my own private practice.
Growing up with realtors for parents, I saw the flexibility that being self-employment can bring, especially when it comes to balancing work with family life.
As a mother of two young boys, having my own business has been a great way to be able to set my own schedule to spend time with my family. My family motivates me each day but what is even more amazing is that my clients motivate me as well.
There is nothing that I feel is more of an honour and a privilege than to walk alongside people during their life's journey in some of their most difficult moments and being a witness to their change, personal growth, resiliency, and ability to overcome adversity.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been being able to transition to full-time self-employment. While it was absolutely terrifying, I felt completely empowered.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having a difficult time turning my brain "off" from my business. I am constantly reflecting on what I have learned, what plans and goals I have for the future, my clients, my team, and my day-to-day responsibilities. I truly make an effort to plan for self-care time and quality time with my family and stay present in each moment.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be afraid to take risks to grow.
- Ensure that you plan for downtime to support life balance.
- If something doesn't go as planned, learn from it, keep your head up and keep going.
