Tell us about yourself
I am a woman that wears many hats! I am not only a wife and a mother but also an author, an educator, and a candlemaker! How I got started, true story. Initially, I began making candles for myself. My husband and I love to travel, so I would bring my candles with me on these vacations. If you've ever stayed in hotels, sometimes your room may not smell the best. So, I would light my candles in my hotel rooms to freshen up my room. No sooner than I would light the candle, I would literally have people knocking at my door, wondering where I had purchased these candles! This was the birth of the business Mood Candles.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment I feel I have yet to see. I am constantly pushing the business forward. One memorable time I celebrated Mood Candles was when I heard our ad playing on the radio!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would say finance. Budget for at least six months, as with starting anything, a new business may start up slowly. Make sure your money is in order.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be brave enough to invest in yourself.
- Budget for the long haul when planning a start-up.
- Make sure you are aware of your city codes and zoning for permits.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You can do anything you envision but are locked in for the long road. Most businesses take years to reach higher levels, so the question becomes, can you maintain the course?
