Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Monya Wyatt, Founder and Owner of Monya Wyatt Consulting, located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Monya Wyatt Consulting supports nonprofits by providing recommendations to help protect their money. I add value by creating cash management strategies and processes based on trust, transparency, and safeguards. When done properly, I have helped the leadership team's appeal by winning both board and donor confidence.

Tell us about yourself

I took this solopreneur step because my grandson, Corbin, had fallen ill to an unforeseen brain bleed on 12/26/21. He's had ten surgeries since then, five of which were neurosurgeries, two being life-threatening circumstances. I couldn't maintain the pace of being at the hospital, working in the office, managing Zoom meetings via the ICU, and keeping my family encouraged. In March 2022, I told my current employer I needed to step down, and instead of letting me leave, they asked if I would be a consultant. I realized then if this 100-year-old nonprofit is willing to work with me, who else can I serve?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is taking the step to be a solopreneur. It's definitely an attitude of faith because you walk away from what's comfortable and stable to take a chance on yourself.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is staying motivated when work is quiet. You have to be tenacious to keep building your self-worth and your income stream.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top 3 tips I would offer are:

  1. Build your business foundation first. Don't be in a hurry to make money, and your core areas end up lacking. Areas like accounting, banking, insurance, legal and mentoring.
  2. Don't give up because there are people/organizations that need what you have to offer.
  3. Don't take on more than you can handle. There's enough for everyone. Being too lean inhibits your ability to offer good service.
