The Teaspoon by Day Cocina - Montse Day

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Montse Day, owner of The Teaspoon by Day Cocina, located in Alvin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are the best-kept secret in Alvin; that's what all our customer's friends say when they come. We are a Food and Tea Room located inside the Alvin Antique Store.

We change the soups every week, we offer a variety of sandwiches, paninis, flatbread pizzas, soup soups, and salads, and we have the best Pumpkin bread with a cream cheese sandwich.

Tell us about yourself

I come from a Mexican/Italian family who loves to cook everything from scratch. When I moved to live in Alvin, I missed my grandma's seasoning, and that's how it all started. I'm not the first owner of the Teaspoon, but as far as I know, all with a very good reputation, so far the community has received us very well. We have customers that drive from Montgomery, TX, to have lunch with us.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every week we're being running out of food earlier in the day. We cook daily, and if we run out of food, we will close for the day.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is to find people while we have COVID-19.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small.
  2. Don't compare to big scale business.
  3. Listen to your customers.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

All our food and baked goods we made in the house also offer Gluten-free low carb baked goods, which I called the "Nice baked goods" and the traditional "Naughty baked goods."
