What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Monica Muehsam Paralegal Services, LLC. I provide senior-level paralegal support to expert witnesses and attorneys nationwide without the added expenses associated with full-time employees. I specialize in deposition summarization, file organization, discovery assistance, and support.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a paralegal since 1990 and have worked in medium and large law firms as well as in-house legal departments for large corporations. I knew remote work was the perfect fit for me when COVID hit in 2020, and suddenly we were all working from home. I found I was more productive and absolutely loved getting back that extra ten hours a week I had spent commuting. Throughout the years of working in the legal field, I have honed my organizational skills into somewhat of an art form. In working for a variety of clients, I have come to realize that expert witnesses can utilize the skills of a paralegal to better manage their workflow. Attorneys have benefitted from the services of paralegals for decades, and so do the best experts.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, it has been taking that first leap of faith into the unknown. After working for law firms and corporations for my entire career, going out on my own was a huge step for me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The uncertainty of a monthly income is a tough one- but I feel it is also a big motivator for me to continually market my business and find new clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. Do plenty of research before you take the leap.
2. Try starting your business as a side-gig first to make sure it's sustainable.
3. Network daily with your peers and groups on social media, especially LinkedIn.
