Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Monica Fauntleroy, Founder of Scorpio Candle Co., located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business sells soy wax candles and body products. My customers are my family, friends, coworkers, and from social media. I also vend at pop-up shops, and I have gained customers from those vending opportunities.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business because I love candles, and I was tired of spending my money to buy candles at popular candle retailers. I began to research how to make candles and wanted to produce a natural wax candle, so I decided to use soy wax. Soy wax is a natural wax produced from American-grown soybeans and does not produce toxins or soot when burning or when the wick is blown out; by using soy wax, the candle burns slowly. I also use cotton wicks which assist the candles in burning slowly. My love of candles and wanting to be creative motivates me to continue making candles. I am in awe that I get to actually make products that people like and want to buy and like my products enough to continue buying them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I had the courage to open a business and to continue making products that my customers love.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is trying not to get discouraged when there is a span of no sales. I learned that as long as someone looks at our website that shows they are looking to see what we offer, that is a win, even if they don't buy anything.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The three tips I would give anyone looking to start, run, and grow a business is to go for it and have the courage to begin because if you are passionate about something, everything will work out. The second tip is to be the best at what you do and keep learning about your business and what you can do better next time. The last tip is not to give up, it gets hard sometimes, and you will want to quit, but don't.
