Financial Literacy Accessible for Everyone - MoneyMarci
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marci Grossman, Founder of MoneyMarci, located in West Bloomfield, MI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a financial literacy educator, author, and speaker. My customers vary as I will work with anyone looking to promote financial literacy or to learn it for themselves: schools, community organizations, financial professionals, and individuals.
I wrote the book with young adults in mind, ages 15-25, but I have had tremendous positive responses from people in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. They were making the decisions they needed to make but didn't necessarily understand them. I educate people on the terminology and effects of financial decisions they make on a regular basis.
Tell us about yourself
I am a CPA with over 30 years of experience. During that time, I have found that people of all ages and incomes do not always understand the various financial decisions they are called upon to make. I loved educating them and helping them to get a better understanding of the numbers.
I had reached a stage in my life where I felt like it was a now-or-never decision to quit my day job and move forward with writing this book. My family and close friends were very encouraging, and they were some of my earliest readers.
I love when I get feedback from a reader that I helped them understand money topics they had been embarrassed to ask about. I am educating people about taking control of their money decisions. I love when I am speaking to a group, and someone responds that something makes sense now. I love when someone says that they are less intimidated by financial decisions because of something I have shared.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every day I make a difference for someone. What I do, speaking and writing, literally change people's lives. As of this point in time, my book and website have been up for less than a year. I have been talking to people all around the world about money. I am proud of what I do and the impact I have on people.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
For me, it is hard to reach out of my comfort zone and work on the sales aspect, especially making first contact with people or organizations that are new to me. I know where I want to go and what I want to do, so I make myself get up and do it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research. Know what you want to do, and make sure you understand the steps you need to take and a reasonable timeline to complete them. You need to know the market and have an idea of your place in it. Be flexible if you get improved information but be aware of how it changes your plan and where this new information fits in with what you know.
- Don't give up too soon. It's different for every business, and I'm one of the first to say not to throw good money after bad, but you have to give yourself time and resources to create a new business. Be patient, grow connections, and pay attention to progress. You can never be successful if you quit before you give yourself a chance to fully show what you have to offer.
- Always be open to learning more. There are so many people who have done at least some of what you are doing, whether in your line of business or general business support. Learn from them. Learn from people's successes and failures. Everyone has a story to tell, and so many wonderful people are willing to share their stories and knowledge. Ask questions. Listen. Accept help.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Believe in yourself. Dream big. Be real. Pay attention to the details because it is your business, and no one else will care about it as much as you do.
