What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach Cannabis cooking for folks who want to make their own medicine, and I teach 'regular' cooking to help people love their kitchen.

Tell us about yourself

Food has always been my passion, and after over 20 years in local radio and TV, I started teaching in 2012. At the same time, I dealt with a chronic condition that had me on a lot of medication. I tried cannabis medicine and got incredible results, so I learned as much as I could and started helping other people get well. Healing with food - either infused with cannabis or just well prepared - is what I'm all about.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've published two cookbooks, "EveryDayMaryJ" and "The CBD Cookbook for Beginners." I've taught over 600 people how to make their own medicine and have done it all by myself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I find all of the 'business' type stuff challenging, as my brain doesn't work that way. I don't like taxes, forms, etc., but that's life. My biggest challenge is how to grow when it's all just me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Realize it's going to be difficult.
  2. Have access to more funds that you think you'll need.
  3. Try and have fun.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'd do what I do for free if I could. Helping people get healthy and confident is a joy.
