Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mallory Winters-Galavotti, pastry chef, and owner of Mix It Up Creations LLC., located in Oneida, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mix It Up Creations LLC is a one-stop-shop for all special occasions. Offering custom cakes, dessert tablescapes, and party and picnic setups. I want customers' lives to be simplified by supporting my small business. It's convenient to pick up a custom order then grab a card and candles, so you don't have to make an additional stop before your party begins.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the baking industry for over a decade, and in more recent years, I've been focused on larger events and weddings. Being a creative person makes this business fit me perfectly. The biggest motivation I find in running my brand is the lasting impression my work can have on an event.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Taking the jump to open my storefront is my biggest career accomplishment thus far. There are so many exciting plans that I cannot wait to see unfold.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult aspect of being a business owner is doing everything yourself. This is currently a one-woman show, and most of my days are only partly filled with baking and decorating. Paperwork, cleaning, ordering a product, managing social media, emails/calls, and staying organized are often forgotten about by outsiders of this industry. I've learned that I can only do so much in a day, and that is absolutely okay.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start; there is never a perfect time. Jumping in even if it's not exactly how you'd like it is better than not starting at all.
  2. Prioritize what needs to be finished and stay organized with orders, bills, etc. This way, your business can run smoothly.
  3. Always think ahead with new ideas, watch trends and implement changes as needed so you can remain exciting to your clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Stay positive through the good and bad weeks; owning a small business is far from glamorous. Despite hard work and long hours, it's a very rewarding experience.
