Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bibhu R. Misra, MSc, DC, ACRB, and Julianne Misra, BS, RYT, Founders of OM Chiropractic & Wellness, located in VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a multi-faceted healthcare company with a mission to improve our community’s quality of life by enhancing the function of the body and mind.  We provide a personalized treatment plan including Chiropractic, Exercise Progression, Physical Therapy Modalities, Massage, Yoga, Reiki, and Hypnotherapy to empower patients to feel their best.  Our patients range from executives to students, athletes to couch potatoes, to pregnant woman and their newborns, and everything in between.

Tell us about yourself

I was a drug researcher and my wife was a television news journalist at CNN.  We both noticed our culture seemed to be focused more on treating disease than maintaining good health and believed there had to be a better way.  We decided to try to find it, envisioning a center that would treat mind-body, and spirit and empower people with the tools they need to feel their best.  We love what we do and love the sense of connection and community our vision has created.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is seeing our vision to fruition and continuing to grow.  We are happy we are able to employ more people each year and are proud that we managed to open our second practice during the pandemic and continued to grow and thrive by adapting to the needs of our patients.  Most of all we are happy we’ve been able to empower thousands in our community to live happier, healthier lives over the past 17 years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We find the greatest challenges of being a business owner are two-fold.  One challenge: keeping our growing practice staffed with people who embrace our mission, vision, and values.  Our staff learns so much they are often inspired to continue their education and move on, which while absolutely wonderful creates a pretty constant hiring process.  Our second greatest challenge is balancing home and work.  Owning your own business will suck up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you don’t set boundaries. Because we care so much, that has been a challenge!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get together with your key players and develop your Mission Vision and Value statements.  If you aren’t on the same page and don’t continue to work on this every day, you will likely have discord.    These three things should guide every decision the team and each team player make.
  2. Know your strengths and hire to your weaknesses.  Don’t fall into the pit of thinking you can’t afford to hire help where you need it.  You can’t afford NOT to hire help where you need it.
  3. Take time to develop manuals and training protocols.  Train, retrain, and adapt to changes and demands.  Never stop learning!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Work smart- not hard.  Delegate.  You can’t one-man band it. Do what you love and health, wealth and happiness will follow!
