Small Tokens Of Queer Cheer - misomomo
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in handcrafted accessories but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bowen Kim, Founder of misomomo, located in Bronx, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Misomomo is my online shop, where I make small accessories such as enamel pins, patches, and jewelry. My original designs feature themes of queer and Asian-American identity, and I aim to create designs that help people express themselves and feel seen. My best sellers are my leaf- and orange-shaped enamel pronoun pins.
Tell us about yourself
I am a queer Korean-American nonbinary woman living in the Bronx in New York. I first started my business when I went looking for specific enamel pins that I wanted for myself but couldn't find anywhere else. It means a great deal to me to spread positivity and queer cheer with my art, and I am motivated by a desire to help others feel seen and supported. It especially makes my day when people tell me about how my art has helped them to express themselves or show support to their loved ones.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I find it incredibly fulfilling to have a business that allows me to engage with my creative interests, make art that resonates with others, and give back to and build up the causes and communities that matter to me. I am especially proud of participating in craft fairs such as the Trans Art Bazaar and Dave's Lesbian Bar's holiday pop-up in New York City.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The never-ending nature of running your own business. In my corporate roles, I have highly valued the separation of my work and personal lives, but I find it much more difficult to establish and maintain boundaries when it comes to my own business. Despite my desire to give it everything I have, I know that being intentional and realistic with how I balance my time will allow me to build something sustainable and authentic.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- In our uncertain world, I find it incredibly important to focus on the things that I can personally control. Mistakes and challenges are inevitable, but we can prepare as best we can, accept that perfection is not realistic, and handle curveballs with as much grace as possible.
- Be honest with yourself about your values and prioritize accordingly. Re-evaluate when you find yourself struggling or slipping - what changes can you make to ensure your work and growth are sustainable and aligned with your goals?
- When things are rough, refocus on what you find gratifying and rewarding about your business. My sense of purpose grounds me and allows me to put out work that is consistent and authentic to myself.
