Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in handcrafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Minor, Owner of minorDIY, located in Spearfish, SD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a Cricut crafting blog. I specialize in paper crafts and love helping others create personalized photo gifts. From fun pop-up cards and explosion boxes to supportive cards for difficult situations, my site offers many projects for expressing emotions and connecting with loved ones. Lots of my customers discover me through online crafting summits.
Tell us about yourself
I've always loved crafting and teaching. I started my site after getting a Cricut cutting machine as something for me (I have four kids, so life always revolved around them.) A theme of my site is craft-as-therapy, and I often get emails from crafters saying my messages and projects really resonate with them. That encourages me to keep creating.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing my email list organically to over 17,000 subscribers.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Focusing on revenue-generating tasks. As a creative, I just want to make fun stuff!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Try to think through who your audience is, how you can serve them, and if you can monetize it. When you have something that's a hit, keep doing similar things until you find the perfect product for you.
