Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rolynda Simpson, founder of Mindwise Counselling, located in Kamloops, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is in counseling. My customers are people who are feeling stuck for a variety of reasons and need some support to create positive change in their lives.
Tell us about yourself
I first got started counseling once I finished my Master's degree in 2014. I set up the private practice right away, as I knew that it would be something I would want to do outside of my teaching career. Each day I am motivated by clients who continue to want to learn more about themselves, do work to create change in their lives, and keep showing up to live the life they deserve. It is a privilege to witness the human spirit.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is learning to trust myself. Sometimes, this means I consult others who are experts. They can help me get to where I want to go with the business. I learned quickly that if I can't do it, it is better, in the long run, to find someone who can do it for me!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I find the hardest part of being a business owner is sticking to boundaries around my time. As a helper, it isn't easy to have to ask people to sit on a waitlist when they are reaching out for support. It is easy for me to sacrifice my time for the business; however, I know that is not a sustainable practice, and it is easy to become burned out this way. So although boundaries are hard to hold, I try to maintain them for my self-care, which allows the best version of me to show up for clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Dream. Then, Jump in. There is only so much thinking that is required. Then there is only action.
- Look for community programs that support new entrepreneurs. There is a lot of funding available for start-up businesses.
- Source out the parts you aren't good at - this frees up your time and energy for the parts of your business that only you can do!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
